After 14 operations to save his leg, Rick sets out on 850 mile trek by hand

"I badly broke my leg in a parachute accident in the UAE.  Since then, I've been in five hospitals and endured 14 operations to save the leg.  I was told this month that I will probably never run another marathon on this leg.  Ok, moving on.
 
In order to not surrender my fundraising efforts, I transferred to the wheelchair division at the 2008 ING NYC Marathon.  Two weeks after my first release from hospital.  I was able to complete the course in under 2 1/2 hours.  I have since completed Dubai and Bahrain Marathons.  However, in February I was again MEDEVAC'd to Germany due to a raging infection in my leg bones, and then on to Bethesda naval hospital."

Rick Ryan is a Commander in the US Navy.  He's preparing to travel the whole length of Great Britain from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for several charities helping injured service men and women from the US, the UK and their coalition partners in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Schools learning the lessons of online fundraising

Over the last year several schools have begun to fundraise online with Bmycharity.  Some, such as King Street Pre-School in Cambridge are organising their own fundraising events.  Parents and family members take part in sponsored walks in the local area.  Meanwhile, supporters of Khalsa Primary School are venturing further afield to the Himalayas and linking their fundraising efforts with CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA!

Meanwhile the Abberley Hall Foundation is pursuing a range of fundraising opportunities to help it preserve  one of the most interesting examples of Victorian architecture in the country.  These include appeals to grand making bodies and corporate partners as well as merchandising and fundraising among former pupils, family members, the local community and staff.  The Foundation is also considering sponsored challenges, including the unique opportunity to abseil off the Clocktower, a Victorian folly in the school grounds.

We're delighted to see so many schools rising to the challenge of the current economic climate, and taking the opportunity to involve local communities and companies at the same time - and we're developing our services to help ensure that these collaborations are easier and more rewarding for all involved.
